Funeral Arrangements

"The prayer of a Muslim for his Muslim brother in his absence will be answered. As long as he prays for the good of his brother, there is an angel assigned near his head who says: Amen, and may the same be for you."

-Prophet Muhammed (SAW)
[Sahih Muslim]

Step by Step Process:

Step 1.   Contact us and let us know where the body of the deceased is located (hospital, home etc.). We will guide you through the whole process as per the requirements.

Step 2. If you wish to conduct Janaza prayers, you will need to contact a mosque. Here are a few that are commonly used: Masjid Omar (614-262-1310), Islamic Center on Broad Street (614-253-3251), Noor Islamic Cultural Center (614-527-7777), Masjid Ibn Taymiyah (614-418-9137), Masjid Abu Bakr (614-272-9994), Masjid As Salaamah (614-259-3277).

Materials needed:
The following materials will be needed for washing and wrapping the body: White material for the shroud, 3 pieces (or an odd number), each the length of the body's height plus a yard ( about 9 feet long). It must be sufficiently wide to wrap completely around the body with good overlap. Bed sheets can be used. The material should be clean but need not be new. Strips of cloth are needed to tie the shroud, at least 3 and sometimes 5. Towels, washcloths, soap, shampoo, cotton and perfume are also needed.

General Information:

The body of your loved one will be washed at one of the three masajids - Masjid Ibn Taymiyah (614-418-9137), Masjid Abu Bakr (614-272-9994), Masjid As Salaamah (614-259-3277). This is usually completed by family members with the help of some members of the community, if needed and desired.

After the body is shrouded at the funeral home, you can request the funeral home to transport the body to the mosque you choose to conduct the Janaza prayers before taking the body to the cemetery.  You may also conduct the Janaza prayers at the cemetery (weather permitting) but it is recommended that the prayers be conducted in a Mosque.

We do not purchase coffins for the deceased. Rutherford uses metal caskets to transport the shrouded body to the cemetery and then takes the metal casket back. The shrouded body is placed in the grave on its side to face Mecca (the direction of the Qibla). Then a wooden casket (treated wood), manufactured by The Cemetery, is placed over the body. After the casket is placed over the body people attending the funeral may use the shovels provided to place dirt in the grave.  After everyone interested places dirt in the grave, the burial process is completed using our equipment. Once the grave is completely covered, people may gather for a short Khutba/Prayers. After the prayers are completed, the funeral is complete and everyone is encouraged to exit promptly to preserve the sanctity of the cemetery.
